IHG One Rewards Silver vs Gold vs Platinum vs Diamond 2026: Nights and Points Needed

Aim for the IHG tier your real 2026 nights can reach: Silver takes 10 nights, while Gold, Platinum, and Diamond take 20, 40, or 70 nights (or 40,000, 60,000, or 120,000 Elite Qualifying Points); Platinum is where upgrades, early check-in, and the room guarantee begin, status earned this year holds through 2027, and card spend, Chase transfers, and tier bonuses won’t lift you a level.

IHG One Rewards has four elite tiers above the base Club level: Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond. You earn a tier with nights or Elite Qualifying Points inside one Calendar Year, and it then stays on your account through the end of the next year.

Figures below are as of October 6, 2026, from IHG’s Member Terms & Conditions (marked “Last updated on 24 June 2026”), the IHG One Rewards tier benefits page, and IHG’s member benefits and Milestone Rewards chart.

At a Glance: IHG Elite Status in 2026

  1. Silver Elite: 10 nights. Silver is a nights-only tier.
  2. Gold Elite: 20 nights or 40,000 Elite Qualifying Points.
  3. Platinum Elite: 40 nights or 60,000 Elite Qualifying Points.
  4. Diamond Elite: 70 nights or 120,000 Elite Qualifying Points.
  5. Qualification window: January 1 through December 31.
  6. Status length: through the end of the year after you earn it.
  7. Award stays: Reward Nights count as Qualifying Nights.

Real-World Examples

Example 1: Two rooms on the same night

You book a second room for a friend on the same dates. Your account still gets a single Qualifying Night for each date, because IHG credits one night per calendar day regardless of how many rooms you reserve.

Takeaway: booking more rooms won’t speed up the night count.

Example 2: A stay that checks out in January

You check in on December 30 and check out on January 2. All three nights land in the new Calendar Year, since IHG assigns nights to the year of the check-out date.

Takeaway: watch the check-out date when you’re close to a threshold in late December.

Example 3: Using Reward Nights

You redeem points for a 4-night weekend. Those 4 Reward Nights add to your night total just like paid nights.

Takeaway: points stays still move you up the ladder.

Example 4: Ending the year above your tier’s night threshold

You finish the year at 52 nights and qualify for Platinum. The 12 nights above Platinum’s 40 carry into next year’s status count, so you start that year with 12.

Takeaway: surplus nights help next year’s status but not next year’s Milestone Rewards.

Example 5: Reaching 40 nights

At 40 nights you pick two rewards, for example 10,000 bonus points plus an Annual Lounge Membership. You get 90 days from the milestone date to choose, and the choice can’t be changed later.

Takeaway: set a reminder when you cross 40 nights.

Example 6: A Club member with no activity for a year

A Club member holding 30,000 points books nothing and redeems nothing for 12 months, and the balance expires. One earn or redeem transaction inside each 12-month window keeps it alive.

Takeaway: Elite members skip this risk while their status lasts.

How Many Nights and Elite Qualifying Points Each IHG Tier Needs in 2026

IHG’s terms table sets these thresholds as of October 6, 2026:

TierElite Qualifying NightsOr Elite Qualifying Points
Silver Elite10Nights only (n/a)
Gold Elite2040,000
Platinum Elite4060,000
Diamond Elite70120,000

The terms award status to members who achieve “at least one of the following criteria in a Calendar Year,” so you need the nights or the points for a tier, not both.

The jumps between tiers. On the night path, Gold doubles Silver (10 to 20), Platinum doubles Gold (20 to 40), and Diamond adds 30 nights on top of Platinum (40 to 70). On the points path, Diamond’s 120,000 is double Platinum’s 60,000.

Every loyalty program builds its own ladder. For an airline example, see how Atmos Rewards sets its Gold and Platinum thresholds.

What Counts Toward IHG Elite Status

On the points path, the terms are direct: “Only Elite Qualifying Points count towards Elite status.” The official activity table sorts earning this way:

Earns Elite Qualifying Points

  • Qualifying Rates paid for hotel Stays
  • Hertz car rentals, OpenTable reservations, and Viator experiences (select partner activity)
  • IHG One Rewards Bonus Points Packages
  • Qualified Spend through IHG Business Rewards

Earns Non-Elite Qualifying Points

  • Purchases on U.S. IHG One Rewards credit cards
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfers to IHG One Rewards
  • New cardmember bonuses and card Bonus Points promotions, unless otherwise indicated
  • IHG Dine & Earn
  • Points or Bonus Points from IHG and select partner promotions
  • Elite Tier Bonus Points
  • Point vouchers, purchases, deposits, and transfers, unless otherwise indicated

Bonus Points Packages are the exception among bonus offers: the terms class promotional Bonus Points as Non-Elite Qualifying and state that they “do not include Bonus Points Packages.”

How the tier bonus counts

The tier bonus on Qualifying Stays sits in the Non-Elite Qualifying column of the activity table. It grows your balance without moving your status count, and it goes only to members who collect IHG points rather than partner miles.

How nights count

  • “Only one night per day will count as a Qualifying Night; e.g., if a Member books two rooms for the same day only one night will count towards their Elite Qualifying Nights.”
  • “Elite Qualifying Nights will count towards the Calendar Year in which the check-out day occurs.”
  • “Reward Nights consumed by Members count as Qualifying Nights towards Elite membership qualification.”
  • Bonus Elite Night Credits from IHG partners and promotions also count toward status.

How Long IHG Status Lasts and How Rollover Nights Work

Status length

Per the terms: “Once a Member earns Elite membership status in a Calendar Year, the status will be maintained through the end of the following Calendar Year.” Status earned in 2026 therefore runs through December 31, 2027. Keeping it beyond that takes a fresh qualification: “Members that start the Calendar Year with an Elite status must achieve the required Qualifying Points or Nights to maintain status.”

Rollover nights

  • “At the end of the Calendar Year, Qualifying Nights in excess of the number required for Gold Elite, Platinum Elite, and Diamond Elite status will rollover into the following year and count towards earning Elite status in that next year.”
  • “Rollover Nights from a previous year do not count towards Rollover Nights for the next year.”
  • “Rollover Nights only count towards Elite membership status and will not count towards Milestone Rewards achievement.”
  • The math: total Qualifying Nights stayed that year, excluding last year’s rollover, minus the nights required for the tier you earned.

Rollover applies to Gold, Platinum, and Diamond qualifiers; the tier benefits page lists it from Gold up.

Perks by the tier where they start

The tier benefits page marks these perks as of October 6, 2026. Each applies from the tier shown and up:

Starts atPerks
All members, including ClubEarn points to use for Reward Nights and more; no blackout dates on Reward Nights; member rates; member promotions; free internet; late check-out up to 2PM on request, subject to availability
Silver Elite and abovePoints stay active while you hold Elite status
Gold Elite and aboveRollover nights; Hertz Five Star status through the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards status match
Platinum Elite and aboveReward Night discounts; guaranteed room availability when you book at least 72 hours ahead through IHG Customer Care; complimentary upgrades, subject to availability; early check-in, subject to availability; welcome amenity at check-in
Diamond Elite onlyDedicated Diamond Support line; Hertz President’s Circle status; free breakfast as a welcome amenity choice

Welcome amenity. The tier benefits page lists Platinum’s choice as “Points* or drink/snack” and Diamond’s as “Free breakfast, points* or drink/snack,” with the asterisk noting that the points option isn’t applicable in Greater China. Diamond breakfast covers the member and one registered guest at full-service and select limited-service brands.

Guaranteed room. The guarantee covers one room for the member, at no more than the Best Flexible Rate, and it excludes Reward Nights.

When points expire

  • Club balances lapse after any 12-month stretch without account activity. In the terms’ words, points “will expire if your membership account point balance becomes inactive, meaning there was no ‘earn’ or ‘redeem’ transactions, for any period of twelve (12) months or longer.”
  • “Elite Members’ Points do not expire as long as Elite level membership is maintained.”
  • The yearly card free night leaves that clock running: “Use of the one night per year provided to IHG One Rewards credit card holders does not constitute an ‘earn’ or ‘redeem’ activity to prevent Point expiration.”

IHG Milestone Rewards From 20 to 100 Nights

IHG’s chart says “Milestone Rewards are earned every 10 nights, beginning at 20 nights through 100 nights,” counted on Elite Qualifying Nights for stays completed within the calendar year.

70210,0005
80110,0005

100110,0005

That adds up to 11 picks from 20 to 100 nights (1 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1). The 20-night menu also offers 1 Confirmable Suite Upgrade. At 40 nights the options add 1 Confirmable Suite Upgrade and an Annual Lounge Membership, each limited to one pick; at 70 nights they add 2 Confirmable Suite Upgrades plus a lounge membership, with the same one-pick limit.

  • Two picks: “Additionally, when a Member has reached 40 and 70 nights, they will be able to choose two Milestone Rewards options.”
  • Deadline: “Once a milestone is reached, Members have 90 days to select a benefit on the IHG website or IHG App, otherwise, the benefit is forfeited.”
  • Final: “All Milestone Reward selections are final.”
  • Food & Beverage Reward: each credits food and beverage charges during a stay “up to a maximum of USD20 per voucher” and is “valid for 12 months from milestone selection.” Members in some countries receive a set local-currency amount instead, such as 15 GBP or 25 CAD.
  • Annual Lounge Membership: runs from the day you reach the milestone through December 31 of the following year, for you plus one guest.
  • Confirmable Suite Upgrade: one upgrade to an entry-level suite, or a premium room where a suite isn’t available, booked through IHG Customer Care from 14 days to 24 hours before arrival, for stays of up to 5 nights.

Bonus points versus a lounge or suite pick is a currency-value call. For how points values play out in other programs, see what a Marriott Bonvoy point is worth and how we value United miles.

Which IHG Tier Is Realistic for Your 2026 Stays

Start with the nights you already expect to book this year, then match them to these planning bands:

  • 10 to 19 nights: Silver brings a 20% stay bonus and points that stay active while you hold status.
  • 20 to 39 nights: Gold adds rollover and Hertz Five Star, and the 20- and 30-night Milestone Rewards fall in this range.
  • 40 to 69 nights: Platinum is the first tier with upgrades, early check-in, the 72-hour room guarantee, and a welcome amenity, and 40 nights also unlocks a two-pick milestone.
  • 70 nights and up: Diamond adds the breakfast option, Dedicated Diamond Support, and Hertz President’s Circle.
  • Spend-heavy, stay-light: card spend and Chase transfers sit on the Non-Elite side of the table, so plan your tier around nights or the Elite Qualifying Points sources listed above.

If you’re comparing hotel cards, see our best hotel credit cards for free nights and elite status. If you’re torn between a hotel program and flexible points, the World of Hyatt card vs just using Chase points walks through that trade-off.

TL;DR – Verdict

Aim for the IHG tier your real 2026 nights can reach: Silver takes 10 nights, while Gold, Platinum, and Diamond take 20, 40, or 70 nights (or 40,000, 60,000, or 120,000 Elite Qualifying Points); Platinum is where upgrades, early check-in, and the room guarantee begin, status earned this year holds through 2027, and card spend, Chase transfers, and tier bonuses won’t lift you a level.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many nights do you need for IHG Diamond status?

Seventy Elite Qualifying Nights in one Calendar Year, or 120,000 Elite Qualifying Points if you qualify on points instead.

Do Reward Nights count toward IHG elite status?

Yes. Nights booked with points count toward the night thresholds the same way paid nights do. On those stays, the terms say members “will not earn Points or Partner Rewards on the room rate or room rate equivalent; however, Points or Partner Rewards are awarded for all other eligible charges.”

How long does IHG elite status last?

Status you earn during 2026 stays active until December 31, 2027. Holding it longer means requalifying during 2027.

Do rollover nights count toward Milestone Rewards?

No. Rolled-over nights only help you reach next year’s tier, while Milestone Rewards track that year’s Elite Qualifying Nights.

Do IHG points expire?

Not while you hold Elite status. Club members lose their balance after 12 months with no earning or redemption, and the annual credit card free night won’t reset that clock.

Which year do my Elite Qualifying Nights count toward?

The year you check out. A stay from December 29 to January 3 counts entirely in the new year.
