Which is the better frequent flyer program, Alaska Atmos Rewards or United MileagePlus, and for whom? In our view, it comes down to which airline and alliance you actually credit: as of October 4, 2026, Atmos Rewards fits Alaska and Hawaiian flights plus oneworld mapping, and MileagePlus fits United flights plus Star Alliance partner awards.

This comparison covers Atmos™ Rewards, the combined program for Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, and United MileagePlus, using the program names and figures from each airline's official pages.

At a Glance

  • What each is: Atmos™ Rewards is the combined loyalty program Alaska Airlines launched on August 20, 2025 for Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, per the official Alaska launch news. MileagePlus is United's loyalty program; the official United MileagePlus hub says members can use miles to pay for parts of a trip.
  • Currency words: The launch news calls the currency points (formerly Mileage Plan miles) and status points (formerly elite-qualifying miles). United calls it miles; its use-miles page is headed "Use United award miles".
  • Earning: Current Atmos members keep earning by distance traveled unless they choose another option. Beginning October 1, 2026, members can choose how they earn on flights departing on or after January 1, 2027; new members who join on or after January 1, 2027 default to price paid. United's earn-miles page lists 3 miles per dollar for General members and 5, 6, 7, and 9 for Premier Silver, Gold, Platinum, and 1K on standard fares ticketed by United on or after April 2, 2026.
  • Awards: Alaska lists Points Only and Points & Money with stated caps, and its August 20, 2025 launch news said redemptions start at 4,500 points one-way. United lists award flights on United and Star Alliance partners, plus Money + Miles. Check your route and dates on each program's booking page for the current price.
  • Elite tiers: Atmos™ Silver, Atmos™ Gold, Atmos™ Platinum, and Atmos™ Titanium; Premier Silver, Premier Gold, Premier Platinum, and Premier 1K. Each program measures status in its own units.
  • Deciding factor (our view): Which airline and alliance you credit.

Program rules, names, and thresholds can change; check the airlines' current pages before you decide.

Real-World Examples

  • A flyer who credits Alaska Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines and wants oneworld mapping: in our view, Atmos Rewards is the fit.
  • A flyer who credits United and wants Star Alliance partner awards: in our view, MileagePlus is the fit.
  • A current Atmos member deciding how to earn on flights departing on or after January 1, 2027 keeps distance traveled unless they choose price paid or segments flown. Beginning October 1, 2026, members can make that choice, and they can change it once per calendar year. A new member who joins on or after January 1, 2027 defaults to price paid.
  • A flyer comparing how awards work finds Points Only and Points & Money (up to 50 percent off, capped at 100 US dollars for 10,000 points or 200 US dollars for 20,000 points) on the Alaska award-options page, and award flights plus Money + Miles on United's use-miles page.

Its earning charts are valid for travel through December 31, 2026, and it says Saver fares (X class) booked on or after June 11, 2026 and flown on or after August 1, 2026 do not earn Atmos Rewards points or status points.
  • The September 29, 2026 Alaska news says that beginning October 1, 2026, members can choose how they earn points and status points on flights departing on or after January 1, 2027: distance traveled, price paid, or segments flown. Choosing is optional, and members who do not select continue earning based on distance traveled.
  • New members who join on or after January 1, 2027 default to earning based on price paid. Members can change the choice once per calendar year for future travel.

  • Atmos Rewards suits a flyer who wants one account for Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, points that the August 20, 2025 launch news says do not expire, status points toward Atmos tiers with oneworld Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald mapping, and earning that stays distance-based through 2026 unless the member opts into price or segments for travel from January 1, 2027.
  • MileagePlus suits a flyer who wants Premier Silver, Gold, Platinum, or 1K, miles that never expire per the hub, and award flights on United and Star Alliance partners, with qualification by PQF and PQP or a higher PQP path plus four United or United Express flights.
  • In our view, the deciding factor is which airline and alliance you actually credit.

TL;DR – Verdict

In our view there is no overall winner: the fit follows which airline and alliance you actually credit, Atmos Rewards for Alaska and Hawaiian flights plus oneworld mapping, MileagePlus for United flights plus Star Alliance partner awards.

As of October 4, 2026, Atmos members keep distance-based earning unless they choose price paid or segments flown for flights from January 1, 2027, and new members who join on or after that date default to price paid. United lists 3 miles per dollar for General members and 5 to 9 for Premier levels on standard fares ticketed on or after April 2, 2026, Hawaiian Airlines joined oneworld on April 23, 2026, and Star Alliance's 26 airlines are the alliance's total, not a count of United's partners.
