Why is everyone surprised by this TSA vs. Peanut Butter Story?

Why is everyone so shocked by the TSA vs. Peanut Butter Story? I'm having a hard time understanding why this particular story has gained such traction. I can somewhat understand those who don't travel often being confused as to why peanut butter would be considered a "liquid" and thus needing to stick to the 3.4oz container rule, but for frequent flyers this regulation is just part of the process - nothing new or unexpected here.

From the TSA website:

Common examples of liquids, gels, and aerosols that are NOT medically necessary onboard or are usually available at a destination, and are subject to the 3-1-1 rule, include but are not limited to:

  • Water, juice, soda, and other beverages, except as necessary for certain health conditions such as diabetes.

  • Partially solid food items such as spreads, peanut butter, sauces, jams, and jellies.

  • Sunscreen lotion

It's kind of like when people are surprised that they need to take their shoes off when going through security; yes, it was a hassle in the beginning, but it's become second nature now and no-one should be taken aback by it either. And yet, every so often, there are still those who act surprised by the rule.

As vegan travelers, we regularly take our own food with us through security checkpoints. We learned years ago not to try take peanut butter, spreadable cheeses, or sauces through the checkpoint. The key is not to take these items in there original form. If you have pasta sauce, make the full pasta dish with the sauce on it. That is fine. If you have peanut butter or soft cheese, make sandwiches using them.

This is not a new or shocking discovery. Were you surprised by the recent coverage of this?
