How we make money.

As of September 28, 2026, the official American Express page for the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card states the annual fee as $650. Against that, Amex prints up to $300 a year in dining credits and up to $100 per booking in a Ritz-Carlton or St. Regis property credit. This page tests whether the $650 annual fee is worth it in 2026, using the figures on the official Amex Brilliant card page as of September 28, 2026. Terms apply.

Up to $300 in dining credits a year plus up to $100 for one qualifying booking is $400, $250 short of $650. Each further qualifying booking can add up to $100 more. The card also carries an annual Free Night Award and complimentary Platinum Elite status, which Amex doesn’t put a dollar value on.

So the real question isn’t what the credits are worth on paper. It’s which of them you’ll actually use.

  • $650 annual fee
  • Up to $300 dining credit per year
  • Up to $100 per booking, Ritz-Carlton / St. Regis credit
  • 85,000 point cap on the Free Night

Every figure here follows the official Amex Brilliant card page as of September 28, 2026.

At a Glance: Is Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Worth It?

  1. Annual fee: the official Amex page states the annual fee as “$650.”
  2. Dining credit: each calendar year, up to $300 (up to $25 per month) in statement credits for eligible purchases made on the card at restaurants worldwide.
  3. Property credit: up to $100 per booking at The Ritz-Carlton or St. Regis, using the "$100 Property Credit, Luxury Credit Card Rate" for a 2-night minimum stay. It applies to your hotel bill on qualifying on-property charges (not the room, taxes, fees or gratuities), and only the Basic Card Member gets it.
  4. Free Night Award: 1 every year after your Card renewal month, for one night at a redemption level at or under 85,000 Marriott Bonvoy points at participating hotels. Certain hotels have resort fees.
  5. Platinum Elite: complimentary, and listed on the stay-math line: earn up to 5X points from Marriott Bonvoy with the 50% Bonus Points on Stays. No dollar value is assigned to it.
  6. The math: Up to $300 in dining credits a year plus up to $100 for one qualifying booking is $400, $250 short of $650. Each further qualifying booking can add up to $100 more. If you use neither credit, you still pay $650.

Credits only count if you use them the way Amex describes; check the official Brilliant card page and its terms before you apply or renew.

Real-World Examples

Example 1: Using the dining credit month by month

You eat at restaurants worldwide and pay with the card. The credit covers eligible purchases, up to $25 per month and up to $300 each calendar year.

Takeaway: the credit is capped monthly, so it’s earned in small pieces across the year.

Example 2: Two nights at a Ritz-Carlton or St. Regis

You book direct using a special rate for a 2 night minimum stay. Qualifying charges at The Ritz-Carlton or St. Regis can then draw up to $100 per booking.

Takeaway: the credit depends on booking direct, at the special rate, for at least two nights.

Example 3: Redeeming the Free Night Award

After your Card renewal month, you use the award for one night at a participating hotel at a redemption level at or under 85,000 points. Amex notes that certain hotels have resort fees.

Takeaway: pick a night under the cap, and expect resort fees at some hotels.

Example 4: Spending $60,000 in a calendar year

After spending $60,000 on eligible purchases in a calendar year, you’re eligible to select a Brilliant Earned Choice Award benefit. You can only earn one per calendar year.

Takeaway: this is a high-spender perk, not part of everyday value.

Example 5: Using neither credit

If you use neither the dining credit nor the property credit, you still pay the $650 annual fee. Up to $300 in dining credits a year plus up to $100 for one qualifying booking is $400, $250 short of $650. Each further qualifying booking can add up to $100 more.

Takeaway: unused credits don’t offset the fee.

What the $650 Annual Fee Gets You in Credits

Couple at a hotel desk, seen over a blurred shoulder

The official page states the annual fee as “$650.” Against it, Amex lists two recurring credits:

$300 Brilliant Dining Credit

“Each calendar year, get up to $300 (up to $25 per month) in statement credits for eligible purchases made on the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card at restaurants worldwide.”

$100 Marriott Bonvoy Property Credit

“Receive up to a $100 property credit for qualifying charges at The Ritz-Carlton or St. Regis when you book direct using a special rate for a 2 night minimum stay.”

The property credit is up to $100 per booking. Up to $300 in dining credits a year plus up to $100 for one qualifying booking is $400, $250 short of $650. Each further qualifying booking can add up to $100 more. Using neither still leaves you paying the $650 annual fee.

The Annual Free Night Award and the Earned Choice Award

Free Night Award

Per Amex: “Receive 1 Free Night Award every year after your Card renewal month. Award can be used for one night (redemption level at or under 85,000 Marriott Bonvoy points) at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy. Certain hotels have resort fees.”

The award is official, but it’s capped at a redemption level at or under 85,000 points and isn’t quoted as cash. For what points themselves are worth, see what Marriott Bonvoy points are worth. And if you’re scanning the wider field, other free-night and status cards are rounded up there.

Brilliant Earned Choice Award

Amex says: “Each calendar year after spending $60,000 on eligible purchases … you will be eligible to select a Brilliant Earned Choice Award benefit. You can only earn one Brilliant Earned Choice Award per calendar year.”

Platinum Elite and Earn Rates, as Context

Traveler at an empty rental counter, framed by pillars

The official card page lists complimentary Platinum Elite as part of its 21X stay-math line: “Earn up to 5X points from Marriott Bonvoy with the 50% Bonus Points on Stays, a benefit available with your complimentary Platinum Elite status.” No dollar value is assigned to Platinum here, and Amex doesn’t state one.

Earn rates, for context only

Earn rates, for context only, as of September 28, 2026
CategoryEarn rate
Hotels (eligible purchases at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy)6X points
Restaurants worldwide3X points
Flights booked directly with airlines3X points
Other eligible purchases2X points per dollar

On the same page, Amex prints “Earn up to 21X Marriott Bonvoy points on eligible purchases at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy.” That is a stack of the 6X card rate, up to 10X from membership, and up to 5X from the Platinum 50% bonus. It’s Amex’s own stay math, not a second earn rate, and earn rates aren’t what offsets the fee.

Break-Even: The $650 Fee Against the Credits

Using only the recurring credits Amex prints (dining, and the property credit per booking), as of September 28, 2026:

The $650 fee against the credits, as of September 28, 2026
LineAmex figureCounted in the math?
Annual fee$650The amount to beat
Dining creditUp to $300 (up to $25 per month)Yes
Ritz-Carlton / St. Regis property creditUp to $100 per bookingYes, for one booking
Dining credit + one property-credit booking$400 with one qualifying booking$250 short of $650; each further qualifying booking can add up to $100 more
Global Entry / TSA PreCheck fee credit$120 / up to $85, once every 4 yearsNo (once every 4 years, not annual)
Free Night Award1 night at or under 85,000 pointsNo, it isn’t quoted as cash

Up to $300 in dining credits a year plus up to $100 for one qualifying booking is $400, $250 short of $650 from these two credits alone with one booking. Each further qualifying booking can add up to $100 more. If you use none of the dining or property credits, you still pay the $650 annual fee. The Free Night Award and Platinum Elite aren’t converted into dollars here.

Keep It or Cancel

Keep is closer if…

You’ll use the $25-per-month dining credit, book a qualifying 2-night Ritz-Carlton or St. Regis stay on the special rate, and use the annual Free Night at or under 85,000 points after the renewal month.

Cancel or skip is closer if…

You won’t use the dining credit or the property credit and won’t use the 85,000-point Free Night, because $400 with one qualifying booking then doesn’t cover the $650 fee. Each further qualifying booking can add up to $100 more.

Amex’s pages don’t state approval odds or a dollar value for Platinum Elite, so neither is part of this call.

TL;DR – Verdict

Platinum Elite is the wording behind up to 5X points from the 50% Bonus Points on Stays. Amex doesn’t state a dollar value for it.
