As of October 4, 2026, World of Hyatt and Hilton Honors approach a free night differently, and in our view the choice is about structure, not a ranking. Hyatt’s February 25, 2026 release describes a published award chart with fixed point thresholds. The Hilton Honors program terms describe reward stays booked with all Points or Points & Money, no blackout dates on reward stays, and a 5th Night Free benefit for elite members.

This page compares the two programs on earning, award pricing, free-night rewards, and elite status.

At a Glance

  • Hyatt model: World of Hyatt uses a published award chart with fixed point thresholds rather than dynamic pricing for award nights at Hyatt hotels and resorts. The chart has five levels (Lowest, Low, Moderate, Upper and Top) within each of eight categories, with the updated framework taking effect in May 2026.
  • Hilton model: Hilton Honors reward stays are booked with all Points, Points & Money where available, or a Reward certificate, and are not subject to blackout dates or capacity controls. Reward-night pricing changes with the hotel, daily demand and the current room rate.
  • Free nights: Hilton’s 5th Night Free makes every 5th night free on a standard-room reward stay of five or more nights booked with all Points, for Silver, Gold, Diamond and Diamond Reserve members.
  • Our take: If you want a published chart, the Hyatt model fits. If you want to mix Points and money in 1,000-Point steps, or want 5th Night Free on a long reward stay, the Hilton model fits.

Real-World Examples

  • You want to know the price rules in advance. World of Hyatt keeps a published award chart with fixed point thresholds, with five levels in each of its eight categories.
  • You hold a Free Night Reward from a Hilton card. It covers one standard accommodation, double occupancy, at Hilton portfolio properties, subject to availability, and includes the room’s resort fees and taxes for that night.
  • You are booking a week at one Hilton hotel with Points. On a standard-room reward stay of five or more nights booked with all Points, a Silver, Gold, Diamond or Diamond Reserve member gets every 5th night free, up to four free nights per stay.
  • You want to spend some Points and some cash at Hilton. You can book a reward stay with nearly any combination of Points and money, in increments of 1,000 Points starting at 5,000 Points.
  • You are an elite or cardholder at Hyatt. Hyatt’s February 25, 2026 release said Explorists, Globalists, Lifetime Globalists and World of Hyatt Credit Cardmembers will enjoy early access to award night availability.

Names, Currency, and How Points Are Earned

  • Hyatt’s program is World of Hyatt, and its currency is points. Its elite members include Explorists, Globalists and Lifetime Globalists.
  • Hilton’s program is Hilton Honors, and its currency is Hilton Honors Points.
  • Hilton’s terms say members earn 10 Base Points per U.S. dollar of Eligible Spend at most brands, 5 at Homewood Suites, Home2 Suites, Spark, Tru, Apartment Collection and YOTEL, and 3 at LivSmart Studios. Hilton’s member-benefits page lists the same rates and notes they may vary by region.
  • Elite members earn a bonus on Base Points: 20% at Silver, 80% at Gold, 100% at Diamond and 120% at Diamond Reserve.

How Award Nights Are Priced

Empty wooden bench facing a wide valley in late daylight
  • Hyatt’s release says World of Hyatt remains committed to a published award chart and to fixed point thresholds rather than dynamic pricing for award nights at Hyatt hotels and resorts.
  • The same release announced an expansion from three to five redemption levels (Lowest, Low, Moderate, Upper and Top) within each of its existing eight categories, with the updated framework taking effect in May 2026. It says limited hotels will move a limited number of nights into the Upper and Top categories in 2026, with broader adoption in the years that follow, and that yearly category changes are announced in April.
  • Hilton’s terms say reward stays are stays booked with all Points or Points & Money Rewards, where available, or a Reward certificate, and that pricing of reward nights may change based on factors such as the hotel, the level of daily demand and the current room rate.
  • Hilton’s help page on booking with Points says you can use Points at any available hotel in the Hilton portfolio, paying with just Points or with Points and money. To see Points prices, check “Use Points & Money” next to Special Rates; the total Points per night then appears for each room type. The Points and Money slider is at the top of the Payment and Guest Details page, and leaving it alone books with Points only.
  • Hilton’s terms say Points & Money Rewards use nearly any combination of Points and money, in increments of 1,000 Points starting at 5,000 Points, with no blackout dates.

Free-Night Rewards and 5th Night Free

  • Hilton’s Free Night Reward terms say a Free Night Reward can be redeemed for one standard accommodation, double occupancy, subject to availability at properties in the Hilton portfolio, excluding the properties Hilton lists. You redeem it by calling and giving the code Hilton provides, and you must complete the stay by the expiration date.
  • The same terms say the reward is not transferable, cannot be redeemed for cash or Hilton Honors Points, may be added to an existing paid or Reward stay, and includes all applicable resort fees and taxes on the cost of the room for the redeemed night. The cardmember pays incidental charges.
  • Hilton’s program terms say that on a Standard Room Reward Stay of five or more nights using all Points, every 5th night is free for Silver, Gold, Diamond and Diamond Reserve members. No more than four free nights are awarded per stay, the benefit applies to up to twenty nights at the same property, and it is confirmed at the time of booking.
  • The terms say 5th Night Free applies to Standard Room Reward Stays only, not paid stays or Points & Money Rewards, and has no cash or Point value.

  • Hilton Honors has five tiers: Member, Silver, Gold, Diamond and Diamond Reserve. Per the terms, Silver takes 4 stays, 10 nights or $2,500 in Eligible Spend; Gold takes 15 stays, 25 nights or $6,000; Diamond takes 25 stays, 50 nights or $11,500; Diamond Reserve takes 40 stays and $18,000, or 80 nights and $18,000, in a calendar year.
  • Hilton’s tier-updates page describes the faster path to Gold and Diamond and calls Diamond Reserve its most exclusive tier. Lifetime Diamond takes ten years (not necessarily consecutive) at Diamond and either 1,000 paid or Reward nights or $200,000 in Eligible Spend.
  • Hyatt’s release names Explorists, Globalists, Lifetime Globalists and World of Hyatt Credit Cardmembers as the groups that will enjoy early access to award night availability, and said members would be able to share points digitally later in 2026.
  • Hilton’s member perks include a guaranteed Hilton Honors discount rate, Points toward free nights, no resort fees on reward stays booked with 100% Points, digital check-in and check-out, choose your room, digital key, free Wi-Fi, and late check-out when available.
  • Silver adds fifth night free on reward stays and free bottled water at select hotels; Gold adds space-available room upgrades and a daily food and beverage credit or continental breakfast, which varies by brand and region; Diamond adds executive lounge access, premium Wi-Fi and a 48-hour room guarantee; Diamond Reserve adds a Confirmable Upgrade Reward, 4pm guaranteed late check-out, Exclusive Customer Service and Premium Club access.

Which Program Fits a Free Night

  • In our view, World of Hyatt fits if the deciding factor is a published award chart with fixed point thresholds and five named levels inside eight categories.
  • In our view, Hilton Honors fits if the deciding factor is booking with Points and money in 1,000-Point steps, or no blackout dates on reward stays.
  • In our view, Hilton Honors also fits if you hold a Free Night Reward or regularly book five-night reward stays with all Points, because of 5th Night Free for elite members.
