Is Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors the better hotel loyalty program? As of October 4, 2026, neither program is the better one for every traveler. Marriott Bonvoy suits a traveler who wants one account across a very large participating portfolio and a points-redemption fifth-night benefit that the official help article and the loyalty terms both open to any member.

Hilton Honors suits a traveler who wants status from nights, stays, or eligible spend, a larger published elite bonus on stays at the entry tiers, and a fifth-night-free reward benefit that the official member-benefits page and the program terms tie to Silver and above. Concentrate your stays where the hotels you already use sit, then use the other program only when that property is the one you need.

At a Glance

  • Verdict: Neither program is the better choice for every traveler; it depends on where you already stay.
  • Fifth-night benefit: Marriott's Stay for 5, Pay for 4 is open to any member. Hilton's fifth night free on reward stays is tied to Silver and above.
  • Elite path: Hilton publishes nights, stays, and spend paths into each elite tier. Marriott's ladder runs on calendar-year qualifying nights, with a spend requirement only at Ambassador Elite.
  • Award pricing: Hilton's help article gives a standard-room range of 5,000 to 95,000 points per night (up to 120,000 at select properties with specialty accommodations). Marriott's terms say points per night vary by property, room types available and length of stay, may vary by time of year, and are updated continuously.
  • Points expiry: Both programs' points can expire after 24 consecutive months of inactivity.

Earn rates, award prices, and benefits can differ by brand, hotel, region, and date; check the official program page for your stay before you book.

Real-World Examples

  • A Marriott stay across several brands. A traveler who wants a points-redemption fifth-night benefit can use Stay for 5, Pay for 4. The help article opens it to any member on five consecutive nights under one confirmation using a Standard Redemption Award or a PointSavers Award, and the lowest point-value night is free.
  • A longer Marriott redemption. A 10-night redemption stay deducts the two lowest point-value nights.
  • A Marriott Free Night Award for a long stay. The certificate cannot be used for Stay for 5, Pay for 4, an Upgrade Award, or a Cash + Points reservation.
  • A Hilton reward stay. A Silver or higher member booking an all-points standard room reward stay of five or more consecutive nights, up to 20 nights, has every fifth night free, with no more than four free nights per stay. It does not apply to points-and-money rewards.
  • A Hilton stay at a lower-earning brand. The member-benefits page lists 5 points, rather than the 10 base points, at Home2 Suites, Homewood Suites, Spark, Tru, Apartment Collection, and YOTEL, and says the rate may vary by region.
  • An account that goes quiet. An account with no activity for 24 consecutive months can expire at either program. At Marriott, gifting or transferring points does not keep the account active. At Hilton, a stay, a Hilton Honors credit-card purchase, a partner earn or redemption, buying or donating points, or registering for a promotion keeps the account active.

Who Each Program Suits

As of October 4, 2026:

  • Marriott Bonvoy suits someone who already stays across many of its participating brands and wants a member-level fifth-night points benefit plus a night-based elite ladder that adds a spend requirement only at the top published tier.
  • Hilton Honors suits someone who wants more than one published path into each elite tier, a larger published points bonus at the same entry tiers (Silver 20% and Gold 80% at Hilton, against 10% and 25% at Marriott), and a fifth-night reward benefit that official pages tie to elite status rather than to every member.

A traveler who splits nights across both portfolios should not expect one program to cover the other.

For a single-program setup, see our Marriott Bonvoy beginners guide or our Hilton Honors review.

How You Earn Points

Closed notebook and pen resting on a stone balustrade on a quiet waterfront promenade in late-afternoon light
  • Hilton Honors: On the member-benefits page, the base line is 10 points for every $1 spent on the stay, described there as 10 base points. The same page says members earn 5 points at Home2 Suites, Homewood Suites, Spark, Tru, Apartment Collection, and YOTEL, and 3 points per $1 at LivSmart Studios, and that the rate may vary by region.
  • Marriott Bonvoy: On the points help article and in the loyalty program terms (section 2.1.a), members earn 10 base points per U.S. dollar on qualifying charges at most brands. The terms list 5 base points per dollar at Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, City Express, Element, Four Points Flex, Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy, Protea Hotels, Residence Inn and TownePlace Suites, and at Series by Marriott outside the U.S., Canada and Greater China; StudioRes earns 4. Marriott Executive Apartments has its own rule in the terms. Elite status adds a bonus on top of base points (see the tier table below).

How Award Nights Are Priced

Hilton

  • The Hilton Honors points page says free nights can be booked with any combination of points and money, and says there are no blackout dates.
  • The Hilton help article on redeeming a fifth night free says free nights can be redeemed for as few as 5,000 points per night and no more than 95,000 points per night for a standard room, and that select properties with specialty accommodations may require up to 120,000 points per night for a standard room.
  • The same article says the number of points required may vary depending on the hotel, time of year, and cost of the room. Prices at a specific hotel can sit outside what any one help page lists, so check your hotel and dates.

Marriott

  • The Marriott loyalty program terms name a Standard Redemption Award, a PointSavers Award, a Free Night Award, and Cash + Points Awards.
  • Section 3.2.e says the amount of points required per night for an award redemption stay varies by the participating property, the room types available, and length of stay, and may also vary by time of year. It says points required per night are updated continuously and may change at any time.
  • The terms describe PointSavers Awards as discounted award nights available at participating properties for limited periods, and say Cash + Points Awards use an amount of cash and points that is also updated continuously.

Elite Tiers and Headline Benefits

Hilton Honors

From the member-benefits page, as of October 4, 2026.

Hilton Honors tiers, how each is earned, and the points earning bonus on stays, as of October 4, 2026
TierHow it is earnedPoints bonus on stays
Silver10 nights, 4 stays, or $2,500 in eligible spend20%
Gold25 nights, 15 stays, or $6,000 in eligible spend80%
Diamond50 nights, 25 stays, or $11,500 in eligible spend100%
Diamond Reserve80 nights or 40 stays, and $18,000 in annual eligible spend120%

These are Hilton's 2026 thresholds: Hilton's tier updates page says Gold and Diamond got easier to reach starting in 2026 (Gold from 40 to 25 nights, Diamond from 60 to 50 nights), spend now counts in dollars instead of base points, and Diamond Reserve is new.

The Hilton help-center tiers page repeats the same night, stay, and spend paths and adds Lifetime Diamond: 10 non-consecutive years of Diamond plus either $200,000 in eligible spend or 1,000 paid and reward nights.

Headline benefits on the member-benefits page include:

  • Fifth night free on reward stays from Silver up.
  • No resort fees on reward stays booked with points, for members at every tier.
  • Gold: a daily food and beverage credit or continental breakfast that varies by brand and region.
  • Diamond: executive lounge access, premium Wi-Fi, a 48-hour room guarantee, elite status gifting, and Diamond status extension.
  • Diamond Reserve: 4 p.m. guaranteed late check-out, a confirmable upgrade reward, an elevated customer service desk, and premium club access.

Marriott Bonvoy

From the elite-status help article and the member-benefits page, as of October 4, 2026. Qualifying nights run on a calendar year from January 1 to December 31. Member is 0 to 9 qualifying nights.

Marriott Bonvoy elite tiers, qualifying nights, and the points bonus, as of October 4, 2026
TierQualifying nights per calendar yearPoints bonus
Silver Elite10 to 2410%
Gold Elite25 to 4925%
Platinum Elite50 to 7450%
Titanium Elite75 or more75%
Ambassador Elite100 or more, and at least $23,000 in annual qualified spend75%

Headline benefits on the member-benefits page include:

  • Late checkout listed as priority late at Silver Elite, 2 p.m. at Gold Elite, and 4 p.m. at Platinum Elite and above, with an availability note on the lower tiers.
  • A welcome gift from Gold Elite up: points at Gold Elite (250 or 500 points per stay, depending on the brand), and a choice of gift where options are offered (points, a food and beverage credit or amenity, or breakfast at some resorts) at Platinum Elite and above. The terms list no welcome gift at Silver Elite.
  • Enhanced room upgrade language that says Platinum Elite and above includes select suites.
  • Lounge access at hotel brands with lounges for the higher elite columns.
  • An annual choice benefit at the 50-night and 75-night marks.
  • A 48-hour guarantee at Titanium Elite and Ambassador Elite.
  • Ambassador Service plus Your24 at Ambassador Elite.
  • Ambassador Plus One, which lets an Ambassador Elite member who reaches 100 elite night credits and $40,000 in annual qualifying spend gift Ambassador Elite status to a companion, spouse, or significant other at the same address.

The elite help article says Protea Hotels, City Express, Four Points Flex, and Series by Marriott award half of one elite night credit for every qualifying night completed. Marriott's terms (section 4.2.a) say Series by Marriott in the U.S., Canada and Greater China earns a full night credit, and that StudioRes awards none, so check the brand before you count nights.

On lifetime status, per the lifetime-status page: Lifetime Silver Elite is 250 qualifying nights plus 5 years as Silver Elite or higher. Lifetime Gold Elite is 400 qualifying nights plus 7 years as Gold Elite or higher. Lifetime Platinum Elite is 600 qualifying nights plus 10 years as Platinum Elite or higher. Marriott's loyalty terms (section 4.2.f) say achievement of Lifetime Titanium Elite ended on December 31, 2018, so the lifetime ladder stops at Platinum Elite, and there is no lifetime Ambassador tier.

For the 75-night band, see our Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite note.

Free-Night Awards, Fifth-Night Benefits, and Points Expiry

Man in a gray jacket seated in an airport gate row beside a tall window with a closed folder on his knee

Hilton fifth night free

  • The member-benefits page lists fifth night free on reward stays from Silver up.
  • The program terms, effective July 15, 2026, say the fifth night free on standard room reward stays applies to Silver, Gold, Diamond, and Diamond Reserve members, for every standard room reward stay of five or more nights using all points, up to 20 nights per stay, with no more than four free nights per stay. It applies only on five consecutive nights in the same all-points standard room reward stay at the same property, and not on points-and-money rewards.
  • Hilton's help article says that when you book a standard room reward stay for five or more consecutive nights, every fifth night is free. The program terms and Hilton's FAQ limit the benefit to Silver, Gold, Diamond and Diamond Reserve members, up to 20 nights per stay.

Marriott Stay for 5, Pay for 4

  • The help article says the benefit is available for any member, on five consecutive nights under one confirmation using a Standard Redemption Award or a PointSavers Award, and the lowest point-value night is free. A 10-night redemption stay deducts the two lowest point-value nights.
  • It does not apply to Cash + Points Awards, Upgrade Awards, Nightly Upgrade Awards, or promotional awards such as those issued through a co-brand credit card or an annual choice benefit, and it cannot be applied across multiple reservations.
  • The loyalty terms repeat that a member who redeems points for five consecutive nights on a Standard Redemption Award or PointSavers Award under one confirmation redeems points for four nights, and that the offer does not apply to free night awards or Cash + Points Awards.

Marriott Free Night Award

Per the help article and the terms, a Free Night Award is a certificate with a specific points value for one night in a standard guest room. Members may add up to 25,000 points per award per night if the night costs more than the certificate. It cannot be used for an upgrade award or a Cash + Points reservation, and it is not eligible for Stay for 5, Pay for 4. The terms say it cannot be used at Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy or The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.

Points expiry

  • Hilton Honors: Points expire after 24 consecutive months of inactivity, per both the Hilton Honors FAQ and the program terms effective July 15, 2026. The FAQ lists staying, earning with a Hilton Honors credit card, earning or redeeming with a partner, buying or donating points, or registering for a promotion as ways to keep the account active, and the terms say points earned do not count toward elite tier qualification. The terms say a member who misses eligible activity in any 24 consecutive months is subject to forfeiture of accumulated points and may be removed, and that Hilton may allow the member to remain and remove the account after five years of inactivity.
  • Marriott Bonvoy: If an account is inactive for 24 consecutive months, the account forfeits all accumulated points. Earning points or miles, redeeming points, or purchasing points at least once every 24 months keeps the account active. Gifting or transferring points, or receiving points as a gift or transfer, does not. The expiry help article says the policy does not currently affect points in a lifetime elite membership account, and that the program may apply an expiration policy to those accounts in the future.

If you are planning a family stay around the fifth-night benefit, see our Marriott Bonvoy families guide to the fifth-night benefit.

Which Traveler Should Pick Which

  • Pick Marriott Bonvoy if the hotels you already use sit in that portfolio and you want a fifth-night points benefit that official pages open to any member, with elite status driven by qualifying nights and a spend requirement only at Ambassador Elite.
  • Pick Hilton Honors if you want published night, stay, or spend paths into Silver, Gold, and Diamond, a larger published points bonus at Silver and Gold (20% and 80% at Hilton, against 10% and 25% at Marriott), and a fifth-night reward benefit that official pages tie to Silver and above.
  • If you need both portfolios, keep the account where most nights already fall and use the other only for the property you need.

TL;DR – Verdict

As of October 4, 2026, neither Marriott Bonvoy nor Hilton Honors is the better hotel loyalty program for every traveler. Concentrate your stays where the hotels you already use sit, and use the other program only when that property is the one you need.

If you need both portfolios, keep the account where most nights already fall, and check the award price for your hotel and dates on each program's booking page before you decide.

FAQ

Is Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors the better hotel loyalty program?

As of October 4, 2026, neither program is the better one for every traveler. Pick by the hotels you already use and by the fifth-night path each official page states. A traveler who splits nights across both portfolios should not expect one program to cover the other.

How do you earn points with each program?

On the Hilton member-benefits page, the base line is 10 points for every $1 spent on the stay, with 5 points at Home2 Suites, Homewood Suites, Spark, Tru, Apartment Collection, and YOTEL, and 3 points per $1 at LivSmart Studios; the rate may vary by region. At most Marriott brands, members earn 10 base points per U.S. dollar on qualifying charges; Marriott's terms list 5 base points at brands such as Residence Inn, TownePlace Suites, Element, City Express and Four Points Flex, and 4 at StudioRes.

How are award nights priced at each?

The Hilton points page says free nights can be booked with any combination of points and money and that there are no blackout dates, and Hilton's help article gives a standard-room range of 5,000 to 95,000 points per night, up to 120,000 at select properties with specialty accommodations. The Marriott loyalty terms name a Standard Redemption Award, a PointSavers Award, a Free Night Award and Cash + Points Awards, and say points per night vary by participating property, room types available and length of stay, may vary by time of year, and are updated continuously.

How do you reach elite status at each?

Hilton Silver, Gold, and Diamond each have a nights path, a stays path, and a spend path on the member-benefits page. Diamond Reserve on that page is 80 nights or 40 stays, and $18,000 annual eligible spend. Marriott elite status is driven by calendar-year qualifying nights, with a spend requirement at Ambassador Elite of at least $23,000 in annual qualified spend alongside 100 or more qualifying nights.

Which program gives a fifth-night benefit to every member?

Marriott's Stay for 5, Pay for 4 is available for any member, on five consecutive nights under one confirmation using a Standard Redemption Award or a PointSavers Award. The Hilton member-benefits page and the program terms effective July 15, 2026 tie fifth night free on standard room reward stays to Silver, Gold, Diamond, and Diamond Reserve, not to every member.

Do hotel points expire at each?

Hilton Honors points expire after 24 consecutive months of inactivity, and Marriott Bonvoy points can expire if an account is inactive for 24 consecutive months. Each program has its own list of activity that keeps the account active, covered in the points expiry section above.
