Booking

This flight was booked as a cash ticket, part of a round-trip itinerary that’s one-part vacation and one-part tier point run. All of our flights on this itinerary are being credited to our British Airways Executive club accounts. The next few flights will take us from British Airways Executive Club Bronze status to British Airways Executive Club Silver status.

Palm Springs Airport, An Overview

Palm Springs International Airport is always a good experience. The concourse is mostly outside and the layout make it very easy to know where you are going. Inside of security, there are two bars. One bar in each terminal. If the one in your terminal is full, go to the other terminal, as they’re only a 5 minute walk from one another. Today the bar in the older part (busier) of the airport had a line, while the bar in the newer part of the airport had ample seating.

Bathrooms

The best bathrooms are next to the high gates to the right after security. There’s never a line, there are plenty of stalls. Don’t tell anyone I told you.

Security

To expedite security on our trip we used the Clear kiosks at the entrance. Clear plus TSA Precheck are the almighty duo in VIP security shortcutting, and we recommend getting both. There is never a line for Clear, and there is a line for regular security. Although usually quite small in terms of security lines, it is exponentially longer for major travel days including spring break. Also, consider local events like golf and tennis tournaments. If you don’t have Clear already, get it. If you have the American Express Platinum Card, it will cover the cost of your Clear membership. This membership cost is discounted if you have elite status with United Airlines.

The overall vibe of Palm Springs is chill and pleasant. There is plenty of serene outdoor seating.

Boarding process and gate conditions

American Airlines boards in the old gates (1 through 11). These gates can be claustrophobic on a good day. In the atrium at the entrance to the gates, there is a pleasant outdoor seating area with Chihuli art pieces on display. It’s a good spot to take a deep breath, get some fresh air, and brace yourself for boarding at this end of the airport.

For today’s flight, the boarding area was packed full, with very little seating available. Nonetheless, our flight boarded on time, and quickly. We boarded with group 1. Upon boarding, we were offered a pre-departure beverage.

American Airlines A321 first class seat

This flight was the first segment of our business class roundtrip to Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Upon booking, the seat map for this flight was wide open. We selected seats 2D and 2F, as we do not prefer the bulk head seats

Seat comfort and legroom

This American Airlines A321 had the Project Oasis configuration. The seats are very comfortable, with plenty of space for your body. There is personal storage under and alongside the seat. An extendable tray in the armrest is particularly useful when traveling solo and sitting next to a stranger. I particularly like the tray tables on aircraft with this configuration. Even after a few years they still feel new and fresh.

Overhead storage

There was an abundance of overhead space. Other boarders, although clustered, were courteous and amicable. This flight was probably only 50% full, and there was no shortage of space in either cabin.

American Airlines A321 First Class service

It’s rare these days, in my experience, to get drink service prior to takeoff. United dropped this in about year 2 of the pandemic. American, on the other hand, is still going strong with their pre-flight beverage service. Additionally, their flight attendants are consistently nice. On this flight they were friendly, amicable, and down to earth. They provided:

  • Pre-departure beverage service

  • In-flight beverage service

  • Snacks - “help yourself to more than one” including Biscoff, pretzels, etc. As a plant-based person, I appreciate what I’m familiar with - I don’t want to read labels in public and interrupt someone’s job. That said, there were several snack options I didn’t even explore, and they would have been happy to let me.

American Airlines A321 First Class bathroom

The bathroom was a reasonable size and very clean, even at the of the flight. Strangely, it smelled like fresh sage.

Conclusion

I really enjoy American Airlines service, and I really, really enjoy their first class product.
